The Divine Comedy, an epic poem (1307?-1320?) by Italian poet Dante Alighieri.

Today's word - perspective

PBS Kids에서 방영하는 프로그램 중 제일 좋아하는 건 Arthur다.
오늘은 좀 특이하게 두편이 이어져서 나왔다.
아더의 부모님이 결혼 10주년을 맞아서 아더와 D.W.는 부모님께 선물을 드리고 그 와중에 두 남매는 자신의 선물이 더 낫다며 투닥투닥댄다.
그들의 부모님은 10주념 기념으로 여행을 가기로 하는데 일이 계속 꼬이는 바람에 아더의 가족들은 예정대로 하질 못한다.
하지만 나름대로 온가족이 즐겁게 일을 풀어나가고 그들만의 파티를 벌인다.
아더는 일어났던 모든 일들을 글로 써서 발표를 하는데 그 때 나왔던 단어가 이 단어였다.
원근법에서 관점까지..
어렵다.ㅡㅡ;;

Today's word - conviction

C로 시작하는 거의 모든 단어에 약한 나다.
왜 다들 비슷비슷하게 생긴건지 다른 단어들에 비해 헷갈린다.
Conviction이란 단어 역시 제대로 뜻을 모르는 단어였다.
Convict에서 파생된 단어인 듯 한데 뜻을 보니 단순히 명사화 된 게 아닌 것 같다.
사실에 입각한 확신, 신념이라..
제법 고집스런 단어다.

conviction

Today's word - forensic

오늘 the Bone Collector란 영화를 봤다.
연쇄살인에 관한 영화인만큼(앗, 스포일러인가?) 이 단어가 줄기차게 나왔다.
뭔가 법정용어랑 관련이 있겠다 싶었는데 역시 그랬다.
법의학의, 수사적인..
왜 한글(을 가장한 한문)이 더 어려울까?

어제의 단어 mesmerize의 정의 중 나온 단어 hypnotize를 정확히 몰라서 오늘의 단어로 선택했다.
이 단어 역시 노래가사에서 줄기차게 들은건데 이제서야 뜻을 찾아보게 됐다.
최면을 걸다라니..
hypnosis란 단어에서 나온 파생어인듯 하다.

Today's word - mesmerize

오늘 갑자기 이 단어가 입안에서 맴돌았다. 많이 들어본 단어인데 뜻을 정확히 몰랐던 단어였다.
아마도 이 단어는 연예계 뉴스나 노래 가사에서 접해본 단어가 아닐까 한다. 그쪽에서 쓰임새가 많을 것 같은 뜻을 지닌 단어니까 말이다.
어원이 사람이름이란 것도 재밌다. 메스머란 의사는 누굴까? 최면술사?

이번 외할머니 장례식 때문에 외삼촌이 계시는 LA에 갔었다.
정확히는 Chino Hills란 곳인데 LA 다운타운에서 차로 한시간 반정도 떨어진 곳에 있다.
그곳에 위의 개가 살고 있다.

개의 이름은 미키(micky? mickie? 물어보지 않아서..).
치와와이고 나이는 15살이다.
성격이 꽤나 까다로운 편이라 주인과 주인 가족 이외에는 만지지 못하게 하고, 음식도 직접 만들어준 최상급 고기 이외에는 먹지도 않는다고 한다.
고소공포증이 있어서 안아올리면 꼼짝도 못한다.
그래서 잠시 내 사촌(이 개 주인의 딸)이 안아 올렸을 때 살짝 만질 수 있었다.

이제 나이도 많이 먹었고 털색도 탈색된 걸 보면 기가 죽을 만도 하건만, 예전과 똑같이 기세등등이다.
외삼촌이 너무 예뻐해서 그런가?
미키야, 좀 더 너그러워지면 안되겠니?
거참, 만진다고 털이 닳는것도 아니건만..

집으로 오기 직전 따뜻한 햇볕쬐고 있는 미키를 찍어봤다.
이렇게 보면 영락없이 귀여운 치와와인데 말이다.
그래, 오래오래 살아서 귀여움 독차지하길 바란다.
막내아들 역할도 쉽지는 않을터이니 말이다.
